Best Fun Activities Not To Miss in Perth this August

By | August 3, 2018

If the winter blues are getting you down, Perth is turning the heat up this August with food festivals, winter markets, oyster appreciation events and more.

Despite its isolation, which can make the city feel behind the rest of the country, Perth has been long known as a travel gem. It may be a trek from most destinations, but Perth’s remoteness makes its appeal even stronger.

The isolated city’s buzz demands more attention from locals and tourists than ever before. Now is a great time to be a ‘Perthie’. The winter hibernation effects may be real, but this August there’s a lot to experience in Perth.

If you and the couch have had too many movie dates this winter, here are the best Perth events and things to do to get you up and about:

Book a Day Trip to Rottnest Island

Sometimes it’s nice to escape the daily grind and getaway. A half hour boat trip from Fremantle jetty (or an hour from Perth city) and Rottnest Island is WA’s little slice of paradise.

Few people visit Rotto in winter. Which for many, makes the island even more appealing.

But the lack of crowds isn’t the only perk for exploring off the coast in August. It’s the annual migrations of humpback whales, with a chance to see them up close and personal on whale watching tours. Expect cheaper accommodation and ferry rates too.

Embrace Your Inner Child with an Inflatable Obstacle Course

Cooler months call for entertainment. Winter can get dull in Perth, so get a few friends together and embrace your inner child.

Whether it’s for a party or just ‘because’, hiring an inflatable obstacle course or joining in a game of bubble soccer will certainly get you moving. Plus, why should kids have all the fun with their toys?

You may need to source a local park for space or hire a similar location, depending on the size of the party. Here are some local reserves for hire that could be suitable. You can also check the facilities section of the council’s website near you.

Indulge in Freshly Shucked Oysters

Sunday 5th August is World Oyster Day. To celebrate, some of Perth’s best bars and restaurants are putting on an oyster extravaganza. Elizabeth Quay’s Oyster Bar will have freshly shucked oysters, live music and a DIY Bloody Mary bar. All oysters are sourced locally, shucked to order and paired with cocktail or bubbles.

Live Music, Comedy and Vinyl Nights at Creatures Next Door

The quirky, culture-inspired suburb of Fremantle has some of Perth’s (if not Australia’s) best live music venues. Creatures Next Door, adjacent to Little Creatures, has a mix of everything from live music and comedy nights to beer tours, beer schools and winter warmer beer dinners. They also run an occasional BYO vinyl night for vinyl-lovers to share their favourite records and make new friends.

Celebrate International Beer Day

Say cheers this International beer day at your favourite local brewery. Although the date is 4th August, there’s lots of celebrations to be had around Perth for the weekend. Perth Craft Beer Festival runs from 17th-19th August, with more than 350 beers on tap and a realm of attractions. Gage Roads Brewing Co. will also be beer-ing things up, as well as almost every good pub/brewery in Perth.

Warm Up with City to Surf

Perth’s Chevron City to Surf runs annually on the last Sunday of August. The event is now in its 44th year and makes a good excuse to get active, raise funds and join in with the community.

You don’t have to be a hardcore runner to get involved. The City to Surf run is about as fun as you can get. Dress up, run it, walk, or bring your kids/dog along for the adventure.

Perth Good Food and Wine Show

If you’re a food and wine lover, then this yearly delight shouldn’t be missed.

The Good Food and Wine Show is held at Perth’s Convention Centre, 24th-26th August 2018. Get a group together and discover new local and international foods, wines and the latest, tastiest gourmet products.

Every year the event runs masterclasses, wine and food tastings, cheese appreciation journeys and some of the best Australian icons of the culinary industry.

Truffle and Cheese

August is truffle season month in Western Australia. Truffle lovers can buy their fair share of them in Manjimup or head to the Bib & Tucker winter series of truffles and cheese for a four-course menu of food, wine, cheese, self-indulgence and of course….truffles.

August doesn’t have to be gloomy! Nothing beats a winter night rugged up on the couch. However, if you’re looking to venture out and need some motivation, these Perth events will certainly help.
